I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Road Safety, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. The Bettws Neighbourhood Policing team are working on improving road safety outside of Malpas Court Primary School, following reports of parking issues and concerns for children's safety.
On Monday 24th February, our PCSO's conducted patrols with Heddlu Bach to increase road safety by handing out informative leaflets and asking parents to park safely, avoiding double yellow lines, white zigzag lines, yellow zigzag lines and junctions. Parking on zigzags or in the middle of a pavement, not allowing a wheelchair or pram to pass safely, is dangerous and may result in points being added to your licence and a fine.
What is Heddlu Bach? It's a program aimed at providing positive experiences for school children aged 9-11 years old, particularly in Gwent. It serves as a volunteering opportunity where children act as "Mini police-officers," participating in community projects and initiatives alongside local Neighbourhood Policing Teams. This program allows children to develop confidence, promote engagement and encourages the tackling of local issues through educational and community activities.
We understand frustrations and the limited parking available. We want to work with parents/ guardians to alleviate these issues. Here’s how you can help or kindly encourage others to help:
• Choose a safe parking area, away from the main gate and away from junctions • If you live locally, walk your children to school– this will be a lot easier with nicer weather on the way! • Car sharing will reduce traffic in the area and lower the need for multiple parking spaces • Park in neighbouring streets and walk your child to the school • Set off on your journey to school in plenty of time to avoid the busiest times • Turning your vehicle near to the school entrance and exit should be avoided, away from the congestion of other vehicles and pedestrians, reducing the risk of collisions • Be kind to others and be mindful of those living near the school
If there’s any questions or queries you have, we’d love to hear from you. Thank you for your continued support with this issue.
